San Beda University fell short in their comeback attempt against Jose Rizal University, but they came pretty close to pulling it off thanks to bench spark plug Gab Cometa.
The sophomore guard scored all of his 15 points in the second half as they tried to erase leads of as high as 20 against the Heavy Bombers. In the fourth quarter, Cometa scored nine straight points that brought San Beda to within four, 81-77, with 1:45 left in the game.
And the 22-year-old cager said it was just his way of stepping up for their starters, who may have been experiencing fatigue due to a compact schedule in the NCAA Season 98.
"Nag-take over lang ako kasi parang overfatigue na 'yung mga starters from sa mga previous games namin. Parang kailangan siguro mag-step up pa ng bench," he said as he also finished with three assists and two rebounds in their 83-80 defeat.
"Kasi nasa stage ako na nag-stick ako sa sistema namin pero kulang pa rin."
But while he had a breakout game for the Red Lions, Cometa said it was still not enough as they fell to 4-2, tying JRU in the team standings.
"Kailangan namin ng starters sana pero ayun lang, nando'n na eh so bawi na lang sa next game."
