San Beda guard James Kwekuteye 'staying positive' amidst struggles on offense, says coach

James Kwekuteye is San Beda University's top scorer, averaging 15.18 points to go along with 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.55 steals, and 0.45 blocks as the Red Lions ascended to 7-4 in the NCAA Season 98.

But the Filipino-Canadian guard has been struggling to connect from the field, at least in his last two outings.

Kwekuteye couldn't make much of an impact offensively in San Beda's 75-72 loss to University of Perpetual Help System DALTA last week after scoring just five points to go along with nine rebounds, and one steal.

The senior baller did better against Emilio Aguinaldo College with 13 markers and nine boards, but he only converted four of his 15 field goal attempts as San Beda eked out a 72-64 win over the Generals.

Escueta, though, is happy to see his main gunner remain positive amidst these struggles.

"I know he's been struggling even in the last game but he's really stayed positive," Escueta shared.

"Kasi usually 'yung James before 'pag medyo nagsa-struggle, medyo he's more conscious about his game eh pero ngayon, he's really happy for the other guys like sila Tony (Ynot), even (Clifford) Jopia."

Escueta also calls on other Red Lions as they are set to treat every game like it's their last.

"Every game right now is a must-win, especially some teams are trying to separate themselves already in the top four or top two eh," added the rookie coach.

"So if you lose one game, you could be at the top six or seven and if you win one game, you'll be back at top three so gano'n talaga 'yung season na 'to eh. It's a matter of us stringing up wins as the second round continues."
