JRU upgrades John Amores indefinite suspension to removal from team; counseling to be provided | NCAA Philippines

Jose Rizal University has upgraded its decision on Heavy Bomber John Amores from indefinite suspension to removal from the team.

In a 24 Oras report on Tuesday, the University said along with his removal from the team, he will also no longer be a part of any sports program of JRU, effective immediately.

"Contingent with this action: (i) all privileges accruing to Mr. Amores as a student-athlete have been canceled; and (ii) based on the Student Manual of the University, he has been further meted out the penalty of suspension from his classes and has been required to undergo community service," JRU said in a statement.

The University said it will also provide counseling to Amores "and help to cope with the strain of what has taken place in his young life."

JRU previously apologized for the incident that happened on November 8 during their game against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde where Amores ran amok with 3:22 minutes left in the game. The NCAA also previously slapped an indefinite suspension on Amores.

Benilde players Taine Davis and Jimboy Pasturan also filed a complaint against Amores regarding the incident.

Response to Pumaren's speech

Former basketball coach and Quezon City Rep. Franz Pumaren on Monday urged the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to sanction John Amores regarding the incident.

In response, the SBP said it is leaving to NCAA and JRU the necessary actions needed to be taken regarding Amores and the incident.

"We'd like to think that they are ran by professionals and right thinking officials so we give them kumbaga operational independence to police their ranks," SBP director Sonny Barrios said.

NCAA legal counsel Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada, meanwhile, said they welcome the points raised by Pumaren.

"Yun ang mga pinag-uusapan, how we can look at existing policies and rules and how we can improve and address all of these concerns. We welcome all of those things raised by our good congressman and we assure him and the public that the NCAA is taking this seriously."
