Masiglat double-double powers Mapua past Perpetual en route to 3-0 start

 

Lance Masiglat dropped a double-double outing to steer Mapua University to a 75-66 victory over University of Perpetual Help System DALTA as they remained unbeaten in the NCAA Season 98 juniors basketball tournament on Monday.

The young slotman finished with 17 points on an impressive 88.9 shooting percentage from the field to go along with 13 rebounds and two assists as the Red Robins cruised to a clean 3-0 slate while the Junior ALTAs absorbed their first loss to go 2-1.

Perpetual outscored Mapua in the third period, pouring in 23 points against the 17 of the opposing side to head to the payoff period down by just one, 60-59. During that run, Jan Pagulayan ignited Perpetual's run, nailing back-to-back triples to tie things up at 52.

Nygel Gonzales, though, provided the early spark for Mapua in the fourth with three straight baskets that sent the Red Robins to a 65-60 cushion halfway through the period. A Joaquin Coronel triple then brought Mapua to a 71-62 advantage with 3:23 left as Masiglat sealed the deal with a wild basket in the final 26 seconds, 75-66.

Coronel chipped in 14 points, two rebounds, and one assist while Nicolo Mulingtapang churned out nine markers, six dimes, and four boards.

Mapua takes on San Beda next while Perpetual squares off with Colegio de San Juan de Letran both on Wednesday.
