Mapua University extended its unbeaten run in the NCAA Season 98 juniors basketball tournament after dismantling defending champion San Beda University, 76-62, on Wednesday at the EAC Gym.
Mapua, alongside Colegio de San Juan de Letran, remained as the two remaining undefeated teams as the Red Robins improved to 4-0 while San Beda absorbed its second loss to drop to an even 2-2 card.
Nygel Gonzales picked up where he left off from their previous game, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists while Sean Salvador chipped in 11 markers, three boards, three dimes, and two blocks to steer Mapua to a wire-to-wire victory.
Christopher Hubilla was among the brights spots for the Red Cubs with the rising star dropping a double-double outing of 18 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.
Meanwhile, San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Lyceum of the Philippines University dominated their respective foes to improve their standings.
The Staglets eked out a masterful 82-51 triumph over host Emilio Aguinaldo College behind Ernest Geronimo's leadership as San Sebastian hiked its slate to 2-2 while keeping EAC winless at 0-4.
Geronimo dropped 12 points and five rebounds while CJ Rodriguez and Mark Danag each poured in nine markers to help the cause. EAC leaned on on Lance Dungo who paced the Brigadiers with an all-around performance of 15 markers, 11 boards, two dimes, three steals, and two blocks.
Lyceum, on the other hand, bounced back from a previous loss to La Salle Greenhills with an 87-77 escape over Jose Rizal University.
Matthew Rubico was again on the forefront after he registered a monster numbers of 32 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and three steals to send the Junior Pirates to a 2-2 card.
Two players had double-doubles to lead JRU. Martin Pineda scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 11 boards while PE Enal tallied 16 points, 17 rebounds, and two blocks.
The Light Bombers dropped to a similar 2-2 slate.
