NCAA: Migs Oczon turns defensive-minded in Benilde's crucial win vs. San Sebastian

Sophomore guard Migs Oczon has proven that he can either be a threat on the offensive or defensive ends for Final Four contender De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

But on Sunday against the upset-hungry San Sebastian College-Recoletos, he proved he can be both at the same time.

The 6-foot sniper buried two crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter to fuel a 12-2 run that sent the Blazers to a 12-point cushion against the Stags, 70-58. But more than his offense, Oczon also made sure to make his presence felt on the defensive end as he tallied a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds alongside two steals and one assist.

"Mindset ko lang was to get my teammates involved. ‘Yun ‘yung number one correction namin after ng game namin sa Lyceum so I made it a point to share the ball sa teammates ko," Oczon shared on the heels of their 78-68 win.

(My mindset was to get my teammates involved. That was the number one correction we had after our game against LPU so I made it a point to share the ball to my teammates.)

Oczon added that he was eager to bounce back after a tough loss to the Pirates last Friday, where he committed two pivotal turnovers in the final minutes that allowed LPU to eke out an 84-81 escape.

"Actually ngayon lang ako naging positive ulit," Oczon added.

"Inisip ko na lang na may game kami ngayon and kailangan naming manalo. It’s a tough loss, but it is what it is."

(I just thought about being positive now. I was just thinking we have a game and we need to win. It was a tough loss, but it is what it is.)

Benilde head coach Charles Tiu lauded the efforts from Oczon and their team captain Robi Nayve, who also produced a double-double outing of 13 points and 10 rebounds, as the duo helped them outrebound the Stags with 58 boards while limiting the opposition to 47.

"I’m very happy. They were really boxing out so I can challenge the bigs to rebound. Overall, it's a good rebounding game for us so I can’t complain," Tiu said.
