Benilde averts major collapse in OT thriller vs. San Sebastian

Tony Ynot scored five points in overtime while Jhomel Ancheta sank his first and only field goal of the game late to power De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde to a wild 96-94 escape against San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA Season 100 on Tuesday.

Ancheta, who was returning from a one-game suspension due to a disqualifying foul against Letran, split the defense before scooping it for a layup to give the Blazers a two-point lead with 3.3 seconds left in the extra period.

The Stags called on the referees to whistle for a traveling on Ancheta but the shot was upheld and the possession went back to San Sebastian. Raymart Escobido, who was at the forefront of the Stags' huge comeback, missed an open corner triple as Benilde completed the win.

Despite the victory, Benilde head coach Charles Tiu aired his disappointment after they wasted an early 26-point lead and nearly lost to a lowly Stags side.

"I'm not happy at all. This is probably maybe the worst win in my life. I don't want to say anything because I'm mad. It's an embarrassment, we gave up 31 turnovers, parang binibigay namin sa kanila 'yung bola eh," Tiu said.

"Medyo nakakahiya talaga. They can't make free throws. It's a s— game for us. We're lucky we got away with the win."

After dropping 58 points by halftime, the Blazers encountered a dry spell in the fourth, converting just nine markers while allowing the Stags to put 26 on the board as the wards of head coach Arvin Bonleon mounted a comeback.

Down 84-69 in the fourth, the Stags unleashed a big 12-3 run before the backcourt troika of Escobido, Paeng Are, and Nikko Aguilar scored three consecutive buckets to tie the game at 87-all in the final 23.2 seconds.

Escobido, however, missed a floater as they headed into overtime.

Thanks to a triple and a layup from Ynot, Benilde created some separation with a 92-91 lead before Escobido converted a corner triple to regain the lead.

But the Stags failed to put the clamps in the last two plays to lose their sixth straight game.

Ynot flirted with a triple-double of 23 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists but committed six turnovers while Allen Liwag tallied double-double of 17 markers and 11 boards.

Ecobido finished with 29 points to lead San Sebastian.
