Sanlea Peñaverde did it all on both ends, flirting with a quadruple-double to lift San Sebastian College-Recoletos to an 83-77 win against Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA Season 100 juniors basketball on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old dropped a career-high 37 points, highlighted by the game-winning free throws, to go with 10 rebounds, nine steals, six assists, and one block as the Staglets barged into the winning column for a 1-3 card.
The Junior Pirates, meanwhile, remained winless at 0-4.
"Napakiharap [manalo] talaga. I feel bad for the kids kasi isang taon kami nag-prepare so malaking bagay sa amin 'yung nawala si Kit Bonus kasi honestly 40 percent ng team namin tumatakbo sa kanya," Juan Miguel Martin said.
"Hopefully nothing serious. We're very happy kasi finally na-feel ulit namin manalo kasi last year maganda 'yung run namin."
[It's so tough to win. I feel bad for the kids because we've prepared for a year so it was such a big deal that Kit Bonus isn't here because honestly 40 percent of the team runs through him... Hopefully nothing serious. We're happy because we finally feel what it's like to win again because last year we had a good run.]
San Sebastian needed to dig deep after going down 75-69 in the final two minutes of fourth quarter with Harry Herrera sinking a triple and Jozef Apostol completing a layup to trim it to a one-point deficit, 74-75.
Peñaverde then knocked down a layup before Herrera split his charities to tie things up at 77-all. The 5-foot-10 Peñaverde then drew a foul against Zyren Panerio, shooting a pair of free throws to give San Sebastian the lead, 79-77, with 21 seconds left.
He and Benedick Jimenez would then bury two freebies each to seal the deal.
