Times may have changed, but the culture remains the same under head coach Britt Reroma, who has returned to the Red Cubs’ den.
San Beda University notched its first win in the NCAA Season 101 juniors division with a 64-52 victory over Jose Rizal University last Friday.
The win came after back-to-back losses against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde-La Salle Green Hills and Colegio de San Juan de Letran during the first two weeks of NCAA action.
“It’s a great feeling, kasi honestly, at least nagawa ng mga bata ’yung game plan in terms of limiting the opponent below 60. Defensively, we’re doing good on that. We made stops in the end, and we handled the storm when JRU started their run, so nakikita namin na meron kaming proper mindset,” Reroma told GMA News Online.
The victory also marked Reroma’s first win since returning as head coach, replacing Mikko Roldan, who led the Red Cubs from Seasons 98 to 100.
Reroma previously coached the Rizal-based squad from 2010 to 2013, leading San Beda to a championship in 2012.
Before returning to San Beda as program director last year, Reroma was part of the coaching staff at National University and also served as head coach of Centro Escolar University.
Now back at the helm, Reroma acknowledges that while things are different, the goal remains to instill the same culture he built more than a decade ago.
“The kids are totally different right now, especially after what we all went through during the pandemic. So it’s a different type of approach, but the same culture is being built here at San Beda,” he said.
Reroma also shared that he couldn’t say no to the opportunity to return to an institution he considers his second home.
“San Beda is my home. Bahay ko itong San Beda,” he said.
“San Beda gave me a life."
“When the opportunity came for me to serve and give back glory to the school, there was no hesitation. Hindi na kailangang pag-isipan. Lahat ng pagmamahal ng San Beda, sinusuklian din namin ng pagmamahal at pagseserbisyo sa San Beda.”
