It took a playful challenge from San Beda University head coach Yuri Escueta for Zed Etulle to show what he’s got in NCAA Season 101.

In San Beda’s 76-53 win over Arellano University last Friday, Etulle grabbed 12 rebounds — well above his average of 6.6 boards per game in the Red Lions’ first five outings.

“Sinabi sa’kin ni Coach Yuri, ‘pag di ako maka-rebound, si Bonzi (John Bonzalida) papalit sa akin,” Etulle recalled after their game against Mapua University.

Escueta, however, clarified that it was said in jest, though it also served as motivation for Etulle to step up.

“It shows how important his role is in our team. Kailangan maka-offensive and defensive rebound siya, and malaking bagay sa amin ‘yun,” Escueta said.

While the season is still long and more is expected from Etulle, it seems the Aklan native has already found his groove in San Beda.

Before joining the Red Lions, Etulle said he had also tried his luck with Mapua University and Centro Escolar University.

But with the help and persistence of his uncle in finding him a school in Manila, Etulle eventually landed in the Red Lions’ den.

“Siguro masasabi ko lang na unti-unti ko nang nakukuha ang kumpiyansa ko para matulungan ang team namin. Kung ano lang sinasabi sa akin ni Coach Yuri na role ko, ‘yun lang gagawin ko,” said the six-foot-five big man.
