San Beda University notched its third straight win after defeating Jose Rizal University, 63–60, in the NCAA Season 101 juniors basketball tournament on Saturday at the Filoil Centre.
The Red Cubs trailed 39–34 past the halfway mark of the third period before taking a 46–44 lead heading into the final frame.
Juris San Juan opened the fourth quarter with two free throws off a Khellian Taparan foul, and the Red Cubs eventually pulled ahead, 58–49, at the 7:10 mark after a Jack Jomalesa triple.
San Beda continued to pound away in the fourth quarter despite the Light Bombers cutting the lead to two, 62–60, with 1:17 remaining.
However, a San Juan split from the line off an MJ Estocapio foul sealed the victory, as Datu Usop missed a potential game-tying three-pointer that could have forced overtime.
San Juan finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a steal, while Andrei Uggadan added 13 points and eight boards to lead the Red Cubs.
CJ Satparam had 13 points, while Estocapio posted 10 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks, and an assist in the losing effort.
San Beda improved to 5–6, while JRU slipped to 5–7.
