Ateneo teams gun for title sweep in intercollegiate volley meet

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo is on the threshold of sweeping the titles of the 2009 National Intercollegiate Volleyball championship after successfully emerging from the semifinal round in the men’s and women’s division of the tournament. The Blue Eagles survived a five-set showdown against host University of the Cordilleras (UC), 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 11-25, 15-12, in the men’s semifinal round Saturday at the UC gym in Baguio City. The Blue Eagles will face stiff competition when it faces defending champion Rizal Technological University (RTU) in the title match. RTU, which finished the eliminations with a 5-0 card, completed a 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 rout of National College of Business and the Arts in the other semifinal match. The Lady Eagles, likewise, made it to the finals with a 25-17, 25-27, 25-18, 25-18 victory over Saint Louis University (SLU) Saturday. The Ateneo women’s squad, unbeaten in five matches, will take on the hosts after UC swept past University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 25-10, 25-18, 25-23, in their semifinal match-up.
