UPHSD's Borromeo ousts SBU's Canio in NCAA Season 96 seniors online chess opener

The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) took the win on the opening day of the online chess tournament in the 96th season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) which aired Sunday.

UPHSD's Genesis Mateo Borromeo defeated Carl Anthony Canio of the San Beda University Red Woodpushers in the elimination round to advance to the Round of 16.

Like in the juniors division, only three players are allowed per school and all games will be played on website Lichess.org.

The winners of the elimination round will advance to the Round of 16, then the top 8 players will proceed to the quarterfinals. The winners of the quarters will advance to the semis, while those who will succeed in the final four will go to the Finals. The losers of the said series will play for the bronze medal.

Games in the elimination round will be played for 10 minutes only while each player has 15 minutes for the semifinals and the battle for third. The final match will give 20 minutes to each competitor.

On Saturday, Colegio de San Juan de Letran's Christian Mark Daluz won the juniors' online chess tournament.

Watch the chess matches every day on GTV, which airs 3:00 pm (weekdays), 4:30 pm (Saturdays), and 5:00 pm (Sundays).
