SUBIC — Defending champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran was off to a hot start in the NCAA Season 99 women's beach volleyball tournament after sweeping Jose Rizal University, 21-13, 21-9, on Wednesday at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.
The Lady Knights shrugged off the threat posed by the Lady Bombers as sophomore defensive specialist Lara Mae Silva, who played a vital role in their title run last year, delivered an ace that sent them to a huge 19-9 lead in the second set.
Back-to-back errors from the side of JRU, which was bannered by Karyla Jasareno and Czarina Ramos, handed the Intramuros crew the clean victory.
The Lady Knights then flaunted their dominance against Arellano University as Silva and rookie Gia Maquilang eked out a 21-11, 21-17 sweep to complete a 2-0 win-loss record on the opening day.
Meanwhile, reigning men's volleyball champion University of Perpetual Help System DALTA needed some early wake-up call before pulling off its first win of the season.
The tandem of Louie Ramirez and Jefferson Marapoc first bowed to JRU, 20-22, 21-18, 11-15, to open their campaign, but they bounced back right away with a victory against Mapua University to even their record at 1-1.
Also off to a rousing start was the women's team of Perpetual led by Mary Rhose Dapol and Krisha Cordero, who took care of their assignments against JRU and Mapua University to grab a similar 2-0 slate.
