The NCAA recently staged its inaugural golf and aerobic gymnastics events as part of its continued effort to expand its roster of sports competitions.
Last Wednesday, Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Rolando Bregente Jr. ruled the maiden golf tournament after carding a one-over-par 73 at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
“This is the first NCAA golf tournament, so I promised myself to give my best. My name will be in the record books as the first to win it,” said Bregente, who bested guest team University of Asia and the Pacific’s Zach Villaroman and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Sean Granada.
Benilde, meanwhile, captured the team championship with 115 points behind Granada, Miguel Aguilar, Nathan Jasper Lee, Isaac One, Christian Adrineda, and Andrei Lee.
Chloe Radia of the University of Asia and the Pacific won the women's individual title.
Former basketball player Ice Reyes of San Beda University topped the open division with a four-over-par 76, edging Mapua University’s Armand Cajayon and Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s King Gabriel Raymundo.
“This milestone would not have been possible without the PSC’s drive and support in mounting a groundbreaking tournament such as this. Our gratitude goes to Chairman Pato, the PSC commissioners, and the entire agency,” said Atty. Jonas Cabochan of San Beda, the host school for the event.
In the guest division, Ian Umali emerged victorious after beating Mark Ronquillo via tiebreak despite both finishing with identical scores of 80. Paolo Sunga rounded out the podium with an 83.
Meanwhile, the NCAA also held its inaugural aerobic gymnastics event last May 21 at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, where gymnasts from member schools showcased their routines.
