Juggling two roles is a lot to handle for a student-athlete, but excelling at both is another story.
John Vic de Guzman, a volleyball ace out of the College of St. Benilde in the NCAA, said it was hard for him at first to find the balance between his academics and his careers as an athlete and as an actor but as he went along, he managed to find his footing.
And until now, he’s working on being excellent in all of his chores.
“Actually way back 2016, hindi madali ‘yung pinagdaanan ko as an athlete and as an actor kasi ayon ‘yung first time kong nag-enter sa showbiz — Seklusyon last 2016,” de Guzman shared on the NCAA primer show ‘Rise Up Stronger: The Road to NCAA Season 96’.
“Noong time na ‘yon kasi mahirap sa akin kasi kailangan kong i-balance ‘yung thesis, major subjects, yung taping, kasi yung taong noon halos 24 hours. So kailangan ko mag-training sa Benilde sa morning kasi may responsibility ako as a captain.”
De Guzman’s hard work, indeed, has paid off.
After leading Benilde to the Season 92 title, where he was also named MVP and Best Opposite Spiker, the 6-foot-2 skipper went on suiting up for the national team, where he also serves as the team captain.
“Noong nag-champion kami, umiyak ako. First time kong umiyak sa history ng paglalaro ko ng volleyball kasi kung bumagsak ako ng isang subject or di ako nakapasa sa thesis, hindi ako makakalaro sa NCAA for my last playing year,” de Guzman, who stars in GMA Network’s show Owe My Love, shared.
“So noong nag-champion (kami) naisip ka lahat, nag-flash back lahat ng moments.”
His biggest accomplishment so far is the nationals’ silver medal finish during the 2019 SEA Games and while he is fulfilling his acting duties, he is also carrying out his job for the flag as they prepare for the 2021 SEAG.
