No sweep, but CSB routs Letran to remain unbeaten in NCAA Season 97

After dropping a set for the first time this season, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde vented its ire to conquer Colegio de San Juan de Letran in four sets, 25-14, 17-25, 25-11, 25-15, and remain spotless in the NCAA Season 97 women's volleyball tournament on Sunday.

With the thrilling victory, CSB claimed the solo top spot to become the only unbeaten team with a clean 3-0 win-loss slate while Letran stayed winless in three games.

The Lady Blazers scrambled in the second frame with the Lady Knights erecting a huge 21-11 lead with veteran Cha Cuñada serving up an ace to give her side the 10-point advantage.

Daisy Melendres then gave Letran the set point, 24-14, before a push on the ball by her evened the match at one set apiece, 25-17.

It seemed to be a different CSB team in the opening set where the Lady Blazers flaunted their caliber, building a 23-11 spread off an attack by team captain Mycah Go. Mitch Gamit completed a quick smash before Go went off the block for the set, 25-14.

But CSB came alive in the third, marching into the second technical timeout enjoying a 16-10 cushion as Gayle Pascual powered a 5-0 closing run in the set, 25-11.

Back-to-back Cuñada attack infractions in the fourth gave CSB a 20-10 lead before two consecutive points from Gamit made it a 23-13 affair. Go soared above the Letran defense for the match point before Cristy Ondangan went for a quick for the winning-point, 25-15.

Go led CSB with a team-high 17 points off 14 attacks, two service aces, and one block while Jade Gentapa chipped in 15 markers.

Letran team captain Shereena Urmeneta, meanwhile, poured in 12 points for the Lady Knights while Cuñada chimed in with nine markers.

CSB will look to book its fourth win when it goes up against Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday while Letran goes for its breakthrough win against San Beda University on Wednesday.
