Cañete, Santos lead San Sebastian in thrilling comeback win vs JRU

Reyann Cañete and Kat Santos came up clutch as San Sebastian College-Recoletos erased a 2-0 set deficit against Jose Rizal University, 24-26, 19-25, 32-30, 25-5, 15-11, to extend its winning streak to two in the NCAA Season 97 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

San Sebastian, who recently scored an upset win over Arellano University, improved to 3-1 while JRU dropped to 2-2.

The momentum was not on the Lady Stags' side early on, dropping the first and two sets as with JRU's team captain Dolly Verzosa and Renesa Melgar steadied the ship for the Lady Bombers.

But the wards of San Sebastian head coach Roger Gorayeb came alive in the next sets.

They continued to knock on JRU's door in the third, tying the game at 25 after squandering a 23-16 lead. JRU then had five chances to take home the win but Verzosa went wide on her attack, 31-30, before Cañete completed their third set comeback to extend the match.

A one-sided fourth set saw San Sebastian dominating in all aspects as they forced a fifth set, 25-5.

Santos then took over in the fifth as after Cañete brought them up 11-8, the rookie open hitter drilled three straight points for the match point, 14-8. JRU continued to put up a fight with Verzosa sending them to a 10-14 deficit.

But Santos delivered the game-winning point as San Sebastian completed the come-from-behind win.

JRU is up for a tough task ahead as it takes on Arellano on Saturday while San Sebastian goes up against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA on Sunday.
