Almazan, Reyes catch fire anew as EAC rips Letran for second win

Emilio Aguinaldo College made adjustments after a first set letdown as it picked up a 17-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-17 victory against Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA Season 97 women's volleyball tournament on Saturday.

EAC followed up its previous win over Lyceum of the Philippines University as it improved to 2-5 while Letran absorbed its third straight loss to fall to 1-6.

EAC leaned on once again on Cathrine Almazan who poured in 23 points anchored on 21 attacks and two blocks while Krizzia Reyes carved out MVP-like numbers with her triple-double output.

Reyes churned out 18 markers built on all attacks while also collecting 22 digs and 10 excellent receptions to steer EAC.

EAC struggled to connect in the opening frame, surrendering to the Lady Knights by eight points, 25-17.

But things started to turn to EAC's way in the succeeding sets with the dynamic duo of Almazan and Reyes showing their grit.

Down 9-10, the Lady Generals ignited for a 6-0 run behind Jaja Villena's three straight aces, 15-10. Letran then mounted a rally as the Muralla-based school inched closer to just two, 20-22, after a Sheena Urmeneta attack.

Tied again at 24, Reyes gave EAC its second set point before Jeanne Kristine Porto denied Urmeneta for the set win, 26-24.

EAC continued its rampage in the third, where they outplayed Letran with 15 attacks as the Lady Generals went two sets ahead, 25-21.

Three straight attacks from Reyes sent EAC to a 21-15 spread in the fourth before Almazan put up the finishing touches, drilling three of their last four points for the victory.

EAC is up for a tougher task as it takes on streaking Arellano University on Tuesday while Letran collides with Mapua University on Wednesday.
