Letran sweeps Perpetual in Finals to clinch NCAA women's beach volleyball crown

Colegio de San Juan de Letran dealt University of Perpetual Help System DALTA its first taste of defeat after a masterful 21-17, 21-12 victory to clinch the NCAA Season 98 women's beach volleyball crown on Saturday in Subic, Zambales.

The win spoiled Perpetual's bid for a double championship after its men's squad ruled over Emilio Aguinaldo College in the men's category earlier in the day.

Graduating spiker Chamberlaine Cuñada started hot right from the get-go, drilling three straight points to give the Lady Knights a 17-13 cushion in the opening set before three straight errors from Perpetual sent the Intramuros crew to the set point, 20-15.

Lara Mae Silva committed two costly errors before she went for a down-the-line attack that handed Letran the set, 21-17, as the erstwhile unbeaten Lady ALTAs moved on the verge of a sweep loss.

Letran continued its strong plays in the second frame, racing to a quick 7-0 lead as Cuñada became unstoppable with her offensive prowess. A hammer from her made it a 14-7 upper hand for the Lady Knights, but Perpetual, who swept all its games en route to the championship round, nailed two consecutive points, 15-11.

Silva then found a hole in Perpetual's defense to deliver the championship-clinching point, 21-12.
