Mapua outlasts San Sebastian in five-set classic

Mapua University outlasted a gutsy San Sebastian College-Recoletos squad in a five-set thriller, 24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 15-12 on Sunday in the NCAA Season 98 women's volleyball tournament at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

After a late rally by San Sebastian in the fourth set which pushed the match to a decider, Mapua opened the final set with a 7-2 run. However, the Lady Stags tried to make a comeback and tied the game at 9.

The Lady Cardinals made three straight points to extend their lead before Lomibao broke the ice for San Sebastian. Roxie Dela Cruz gave Mapua two more points to reach 14 before KJ Dionisio saved a match point. A Vea Sison ace gave the Lady Stags another chance but Nicole Ong closed the match and handed Mapua their second straight win.

Hannah de Guzman made 20 points to lead Mapua, while Roxie dela Cruz and Chenie Batac added 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Dionisio had 26 points while Amaka Tan and Kath Santos tallied 15 and 14 points apiece.

Mapua will be back on the court on Wednesday against Jose Rizal University, while San Sebastian will go against Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Friday.
