Coach Jerry Yee on Benilde’s back-to-back five-setters: ‘Kami ‘yung 6-0 na malungkot’

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde head coach Jerry Yee gave his players props after they returned to their familiar deadly form on Friday following back-to-back grueling five-set wins.

The Lady Blazers pulled off a quick 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 sweep of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, finally ending a streak of five-set games where they were pushed to the limit.

Prior to Friday, Benilde had to eke out a 22-25, 25-16, 16-25, 25-13, 15-9 triumph over Lyceum of the Philippines University before a 25-22, 25-16, 24-26, 22-25, 15-13 win over Mapua University.

And though their slate remained immaculate at 6-0 - and now 7-0 following this latest win - their previous games left them needing to regroup.

“Oo naman [naging wake-up call siya], siyempre kami ‘yung 6-0 na malungkot e so we tried to address that, we talked to the girls na hindi nga dapat ganyan,” Yee said.

("Of course, because we were a 6-0 team that wasn't happy. So we tried to address that, we talked to the girls that it shouldn't be that way.")

Fortunately, the Lady Blazers responded in this one.

The Taft crew needed just three sets to dispose of the Lady Knights to move on cusp of a Final Four return.

“Ayusin dapat ‘yung mindset and I think somehow nag-respond naman today so hopefully magtuloy-tuloy na.”

“Perspective lang, meaning, yes, five-setters pero more playing time, more time to watch the girls play, more stats. Pero doon natin makikita ‘yung mga kulang natin so basa tayo ng game then make the adjustments.”

(We needed to fix the mindset and I think somehow, they responded today so hopefully it carries over... For perspective, yes, they were five-setters but that means more playing time, more time to watch the girls play, more stats. That's where we can see where we're lacking so we read the game and we make the adjustments.")
