Lyceum upsets Perpetual, clinches first-ever women's volleyball Finals ticket in school’s history

 

Lyceum of the Philippines University on Wednesday made history, clinching the school’s first-ever women's volleyball Finals appearance with a 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 26-24 victory against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in their knockout stepladder semifinals clash at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.

The win steered the Lady Pirates to the Finals of the NCAA Season 98 women's volleyball tournament, where they will face back-to-back seeking De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

Lyceum secured the third set to to move on the cusp of a trip to the championship round. But Perpetual, the second seed after the elimination round, came back to life in the fourth with Mary Rhose Dapol fueling a 5-0 run, to make it 11-7. An ace by the Lady ALTAs' super rookie Shai Omipon saw them take a three-point lead, 16-13.

Johna Dolorito, though, came through with three straight attacks as the Lady Pirates tied things up at 18-all. Lyceum needed to overcome a deficit but again knotted it up at 23-apiece.

Joan Doguna’s strong kill made it a 25-24 lead for Lyceum before Venice Puzon’s ace sealed the deal for the Lady Pirates.

Doguna scattered 17 points to lead Lyceum while Dolorito and Jaja Tulang chipped in 14 and 12 markers each. Puzon, who delivered the clincher, finished with five points alongside 20 excellent sets.

Omipon paced Perpetual with a team-high 17 points while Dapol chimed in with 13 in the loss.

Game 1 of the Finals is scheduled for April 11, Tuesday, at 2 p.m. In the men's division, the Perpetual ALTAs will take on the San Beda Red Spikers at 12 p.m.
