NCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL FINALS

Benilde nears back-to-back, sweeps Lyceum in Game 1

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde showed no signs of rust after a lengthy break, sweeping Lyceum of the Philippines University, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 in Game 1 of the NCAA Season 98 women’s volleyball finals on Tuesday.

Benilde will look to close out Lyceum in Game 2 in a bid to clinch back-to-back titles and a second consecutive season sweep.

Coming off a three-week break, the Lady Blazers remained laser-focused with dominant wins in the first two sets with usual gunners Jade Gentapa and Gayle Pascual leading the way.

Zamantha Nolasco issued a denial on her counterpart Jaja Tulang to bring the Taft crew to an 8-3 cushion in the third.

Pascual then put the roof on Johna Dolorito before the latter’s own attack error put Benilde up by seven, 16-9.

A net error from Lyceum then sent Benilde to the match point before Weilyn Estoque put the finishing kick, 25-19.

Pascual starred for Benilde anew with 15 points while Gentapa chimed in with nine as Benilde moved to within a win of another title.

Joan Doguna dropped nine points for LPU in the loss while Jaja Tulang had seven.
