Benilde survives San Beda's third set resurgence to remain unbeaten | NCAA Philippines

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde had to dig deep in order to conquer a third set resurgence from San Beda University, 25-11, 25-21, 25-22, and remain unbeaten in the NCAA Season 99 women's volleyball tournament on Friday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.

Michelle Gamit and Wielyn Estoque led the charge with the graduating middle blocker pouring in 13 points, while the sophomore outside hitter continued to impress with 13 markers as well.

The Lady Blazers improved to 2-0 and extended their winning streak to 31 dating back to Season 95 while the Lady Red Spikers fell to 0-2 following a previous loss to Lyceum of the Philippines University.

Down two sets, the Mendiola crew gained some momentum in the third set with rookie Angel Habacon shining as they built a 17-14 cushion. Middle blocker Zam Nolasco then powered a 3-0 run to force a deadlock.

Back-to-back attack errors from the side of Benilde saw San Beda enjoying a 21-18 lead before Chynna Castillo made it a 22-20 advantage for them and moved three points away from extending the match.

Benilde hung tough in the endgame with a 5-0 closing run capped by a powerful attack from Estoque over two blockers.

Gayle Pascual chipped in 10 points for the Jerry Yee-mentored squad while Jade Gentapa, who had a rare offensive struggle, finished with seven markers.

Habacon led San Beda anew with 14 points all from attacks on top of six digs and seven receptions while Erin Navarro chimed in with five markers.
