Mapua University barged into the win column after taking down Lyceum of the Philippines University, 25-19, 18-25, 21-25, 25-20, 16-14, Friday in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament at the Pirates' gym in Manila.
The Lady Pirates were leading 11-7 in the fifth set before the Freighanne Garcia scored two straight for the Lady Cardinals to inch closer. Joan Doguna put LPU at 12 before back-to-back attack errors marred the Lady Pirates' game. Raissa Ricablanca tied the game at 12, then Stacey Lopez put LPU in front again.
Gregchelle Cabadin once again tied the set at 13, but a double contact fault was called on LPU to put Mapua at match point. Johna Dolorito put the set even at 14 before LPU was called for four touches. Therese Manalo then finished the match for Mapua.
Ricablanca and Garcia led the Lady Cardinals with 14 points apiece, while Cabadin added 12 points as Mapua improved to 1-2.
The win spoiled Dolorito's 23-point outing for the Lady Pirates who slipped to 1-3.
Earlier in the men's division, the Cardinals notched their third straight win after defeating the Pirates, 23-25, 14-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-9.
Ar-jay Ramos and Barbie San Andres towed the Cardinals with 25 and 24 points, respectively.
Jun Edang had 20 points for the Pirates, while Jhon Icon Aquino added 18 points as LPU remained winless in four games.
