Arellano overcomes first set hiccup to beat San Beda in NCAA women's volleyball

Arellano University shrugged off a tight Set 1 loss to complete a 27-29, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 win against San Beda University in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

The Lady Chiefs lost the opening frame by two points, but recovered in the succeeding sets in convincing fashion to improve to 8-4 while the Lady Red Spikers, who were coming off a morale-boosting breakthrough win over San Sebastian College-Recoletos, fell to 1-11.

Laika Tudlasan and Moming Padillon starred anew with the former collecting 22 points built on 19 attacks, two aces, and one block while the latter posted 16 markers as the Lady Chiefs cruised to back-to-back victories.

Arellano also had to overcome a slow start to fourth set after San Beda unleashed an early 5-0 rampage behind Angel Habacon. But the Lady Chiefs turned to Padillon in mounting a 10-3 run that made it a 10-8 lead for Arellano.

Padillon then completed a combination play to give Arellano a slim 21-19 cushion but Kat Molina displayed her veteran presence to make it a 21-22 ball game, still in favor of Arellano.

Arellano, though, responded with a 3-0 closing run with Heart Villaflores soaring from the opposite side while Tudlasan put the exclamation on back-to-back long ball hits from the left wing.

Pauline De Guzman also proved crucial for Arellano after finishing with 15 points while rookie middle blocker Sam Tiratira chipped in nine markers built on four blocks.

Habacon and Janelle Bachar led the way for San Beda with 16 and 14 points apiece with the former also grabbing 10 receptions in the losing cause.
