Mapua sweeps Perpetual, snaps three-game skid in NCAA women's volleyball

Mapua University snapped its three-game losing skid at the expense of University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19, on Friday in the NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

Perpetual was leading 9-7 in the third set before a Gregchelle Cabadin attack and a net touch error called on Perpetual tied the set at 9-all. Another attack error handed Mapua the lead before they cruised to a 15-10 advantage.

Mapua had control of the set then but before claiming the win, Nadine Berces suffered an apparent knee injury due to bad landing. Berces was brought to the dugout before play was resumed as Therese Manalo sealed the victory for the Lady Cardinals.

Mapua head coach Aying Esteban said it seemed like Berces was not in good condition when he checked after the game, but is hopeful that the worst will not happen.

"Hindi talaga siya okay. Tinanong ko siya kung anong naramdaman niya if may tumunog ba, sabi niya meron daw," Esteban told GMA News Online.

"Hopefully, wala sanang worst na nangyari pero I doubt na maka-recover siya this season."

Freighanne Garcia had 17 points built on 15 attacks, to go with nine excellent receptions, while Raissa Ricablanca added 14 points. Berces had six points before she left the court due to injury.

Only Winnie Bedaña scored in double digits for Perpetual with 10 points.

Mapua improved to 8-5 in the standings, while Perpetual slipped to 7-5 as they suffered their third straight loss,

Mapua will go against San Beda, while Perpetual will take on Emilio Aguinaldo College on Sunday.
