The Kungfu Reyes era in San Beda University got off to a winning start after the Lady Red Spikers pulled off a 25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18 win against Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA Season 101 women’s volleyball on Saturday.
Reyes, who was hired last June to replace Edgar Barroga at the helm, had a solid NCAA debut, thanks to the one-two punch of Janelle Bachar and Angel Habacon.
Lefty opposite spiker Bachar led the way with 27 points built on 24 attacks and three blocks while Habacon starred with 23 markers together with 12 digs and eight receptions.
Up 2-1 in sets, the Lady Red Spikers entered into a sluggish start in Set 4 with the Lady Pirates creating a blazing 3-0 lead.
San Beda, however, turned things around and tied things up at 10-all courtesy of a quick play from Jermaine Joniega. The Mendiola crew then never looked back since then, unloading a 5-0 rampage capped by a pair of errors from LPU, 15-10.
Habacon finished a long rally off a tough shot from thr left wing before a net error whistled against LPU saw San Beda racing to a 21-14 cushion.
Bachar completed a combination play as Habacon unleashed one from the pipe to clinch the match point at 24-17. Jeliane Catubig sealed it from the left side, going through the LPU and closing it out in four sets.
Senior Johna Dolorito did it all in the loss, pouring 13 points together with seven digs and nine receptions while Hiromi Osada chipped in 12 markers.
