Jun Edang and Charles Segui connived to propel the previously winless Lyceum of the Philippines University to a 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13 upset victory over De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the NCAA Season 101 men's volleybal on Wednesday at the San Andres Sports Complex.
Edang and Segui both posted 22 points with the former grabbing eight digs and the latter listing 22 receptions as the Pirates finally broke through after six straight losses to open the season.
The Pirates also received key contributions from Rogel De Guzman and Liam Mojica, who scored 11 and 10 points respectively, while Mark Lanorio added eight points.
LPU improved to 1-6 in Group B while the Blazers endured their second straight loss to go 3-3 in Group A.
Upset-hungry LPU rallied in the fourth frame by unleashing a 4-1 closing run capped by a costly service error from Blazers' Chris Villanueva, dragging Benilde to a deciding frame.
The Pirates then built a crucial 13-9 cushion in Set 5 thanks to a De Guzman kill from the right side. But the Taft crew staged a fightback, unloading a 3-0 blast concealed by Rocky Motol's hit from the left wing as Benilde trimmed the gap to a solitary point, 12-13.
But De Guzman continued to proved lethal in the endgame after he squeezed it through the hands of Motol on the opposite end, bringing LPU to the match point at 14-12.
Motol made up for it in the succeeding play with a powerful hit, but Edang completed a combindation play to deliver the finishing blow and seal the massive takedown.
The loss spoiled a big day from Reymark Betco and Motol. Betco churned out 25 points together with nine digs while reigning MVP Motol scattered 23 markers alongside 18 receptions as they slipped to back-to-back losses.
