The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA now sits alone atop NCAA Season 101 men's volleyball Group A after a 25-20, 25-13, 32-30 win over San Beda University on Sunday at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.
The ALTAs, who have yet to drop a game since their tough 0-2 start, survived a grueling Set 3 to complete the sweep and improve to 7-2 while the Red Spikers fell to 5-4 in Group B.
John Castil showed off his all-around game with 19 points anchored by 11 attacks, five blocks, and three aces while Jester Bornel and Marc Tangon chipped in 12 and 11 markers apiece. Setter Klint Mateo put together nine points on top of 24 excellent sets.
Mateo's one-two kill and Arky Corpuz' solo rejection on Anrie Bakil brought Perpetual to a 24-22 cushion in Set 3, but San Beda flipped the switch and unleashed back-to-back attacks courtesy of Axel Book to tie things up.
Neither team backed down as the ALTAs and the Red Spikers exchanged points in a tense stretch before San Beda eked out a slim 30–29 lead, prompting the ALTAs to call a timeout.
That short breather allowed Perpetual to restore order with Corpuz completing a running kill for the deadlock and Dexter Arrozado firing one from the left side to clinch the match point at 31-30.
Castil and Corpuz then conspired at the net to deny Mohammad Tahiluddin's attack and seal the straight-set victory for Perpetual, extending their winning streak to seven.
Book took charge for San Beda with 20 points alongside 24 receptions while Tahiluddin and Bakil chipped in nine and eight markers apiece.
