NCAA: Arellano back to winning form after escaping LPU in men's volleyball

Arellano University clawed its way back into the win column with a hard-earned 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA Season 101 men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday.

The reigning champions showed their championship poise after a narrow opening frame loss, completing the four-set romp to bounce back from two previous losses and improve to 6-4 in Group B.

The Pirates, meanwhile, lost their bite after a strong start to drop their second game in a row and slip to 2-9 in the same group.

AC Guinto dazzled with a double-double effort of 20 points and 20 receptions while team captain Jiwen Sinuto posted 22 markers built on 21 attacks and one ace as both veterans helped Arellano atone for its shock losses to San Sebastian and Mapua.

Lyceum refused to go quietly in the fourth set, staying within striking distance as Jhon Aquino pierced through Arellano’s tight net defense to pull the Pirates within one, 15-16.

The Chiefs quickly regained control behind Guinto’s timely explosion, stringing together crucial points to stretch the lead to 21-15. He then hammered a cross-court kill to bring the defending champions to match point, 24-19.

Rookie middle blocker Arvin Garcia sealed the victory moments later, finishing a running play to put the match away.

CJ Dominguito was also crucial for Arellano after posting 19 points while Jake Pangilinana chipped in 11 markers built on four blocks.

Jun Edang starred for LPU with 12 points while Charles Segui shone with seven points and 15 receptions in the losing effort.
