NCAA: Adrian Musni stars as streaking Mapua sweeps JRU

Adrian Musni anchored Mapua University's 25-23, 25-13, 25-15 win over Jose Rizal University as the Cardinals continued to revive their NCAA Season 101 men's volleyball campaign on Wednesday at the EAC Gym in Manila.

The 21-year-old middle blocker dropped four blocks to finish with a team-high 14 points and help the Cardinals roll to their third win in a row for a 6-5 card in Group A.

Usual suspects Barbie San Andres and Olsen Jamisola also scored steadily, contributing 11 points each, while Arjay Ramos added 10 points, including five digs as they sent the Bombers to their 10th straight loss, bringing their record to 1-11.

It was a close fight in the opening frame before the Cardinals dominated the next two sets to add to the woes of the Bombers.

San Andres sent Mapua to a 22-19 cushion in Set 1 before Jamisola soared from the middle to bring Mapua to a 23-20 lead. But JRU staged a fightback with Paolo Barrientos and Jake Fernandez fueling a  quick 3-0 run to a force a deadlock.

But Jamisola and Ramos closed out the frame by converting the last two points that allowed Mapua to set the tone.

From there, JRU struggled to mount any resistance in the second and third sets as the Cardinals tightened their grip in the third frame  bybuilding a 22-12 cushion off a service ace from Musni.

San Andres later completed a combination play to bring Mapua to match point, before Jamisola hammered a kill from the right side to wrap up the straight-sets victory in just one hour and 28 minutes.

JRU drew a promising comeback effort from Harry Ocay, who was playing his first match since January 31 — also against Mapua. Ocay made his presence felt with 11 points while Barrientos added eight markers in the losing cause.
