Gilas Pilipinas ends Asian Games campaign with victory over Mongolia

The Gilas Pilipinas national team ended its campaign in the 2014 Asian Games basketball tournament with an 84-68 win over Mongolia on Wednesday in Incheon.

With the win, the Philippines finished seventh in the competition, a disappointing result for a team tagged as a medal favorite after winning silver in last year's FIBA Asia Championship.

But the final score didn't reflect the shaky start for Gilas, which trailed 16-4 against the hot-shooting Mongolians.

The Filipinos, however, quickly settled down, coming to within a basket, 21-18, at the end of the first period.

Gilas outscored Mongolia, 20-9, in the second period to take control of the game with a 38-30 halftime lead.

The Philippines finally put away the Mongolians with a 10-2 blast to open the fourth period for a 73-57 lead.

Ranidel De Ocampo led Gilas with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while June Mar Fajardo added 11 and 12 as naturalized center Marcus Douthit played limited minutes.
