High school student proclaimed PHL Sudoku champ

A second year high school student was named the country’s new Sudoku grandmaster after topping the 6th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge National Finals last Saturday at SM City North EDSA.
 
Ma. Czarina Angela Lao, 15, of St. Jude Catholic School, won over 37 other contestants in the Sudoku grandmaster category, receiving P60,000 and a trophy as prizes.
 
The other winners in the same division are: Alvin Ian Chan (Ateneo de Manila University), first runner-up; Kaye Janelle Yao (Grace Christian College), second runner-up; Jemima Sawey (St. Louis University Baguio), third runner-up; and Ralph Sarrosa (University of the Philippines Visayas-Iloilo), fourth runner-up.

Below are the winners in the other divisions, as announced by Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, chief organizer of the event:
 
Sudoku Wizard division (121 finalists):
Champion: Dielle Tio (St. Stephen’s High School), age 15
1st runner-up: Melvin Baldrias (Da Canlao Agoncillo National High School in Batangas)
2nd runner-up: Ethan Riley Chan (Zamboanga Chong Hua High School)
3rd runner-up: Chesko Grezula (Olongapo National High School)
4th runner-up: Cheyenne Hsieh (Grace Christian College)
 
Sudoku Whiz Kid division:
Champion: Natalia Beatrice Dy, (St. John’s Institute of Bacolod City), age 11
1st runner-up: Candice Renee Beatrice Solidarios (Integrated Montessori Center in Laguna)
2nd runner-up: Gerald Dalan (Olongapo Wesley School)
3rd runner-up: Clyde Wesley Ang (Chiang Kai Shek College)
4th runner-up: Guineveve Soria (Precious International School of Davao)
 
The contest was judged by a board headed by Dr. Jaime Caro, University of the Philippines System assistant vice president for development and director of the UP IT Training Center Program; and Prof. Ma. Luisa Villano, admissions officer of Miriam College. –KG, GMA News
