St George Academic and Tutorial School holds fun run for a cause

With an advocacy to help special children in their community, St. George Academic and Tutorial School is holding a Fun Run in July to raise funds for its programs.

St. George Academic and Tutorial School is a preschool whose mission is to help the poor families of the community and special children through quality education. Assistant Directress Jane Jacinto says the school's advocacy is to help the community, particularly special children and emotional and physically abused kids with the help of different charitable institutions and families from the community.
To help raise funds for children with special needs, the school will hold a Fun Run on July 15. A singlet will be for sale this June at their partner business establishments Ideal Vision SM San Lazaro and Chinabank SM San Lazaro. All the proceeds of the singlet will be used for the Fun Run.

Founded in May of 2009, the school uses a progressive teaching program and classes specially designed to help young children learn and develop as they play. "Our classes will also help you learn about your child on how to participate and encourage his or her development while enjoying the simple pleasure of playing while learning," says Jacinto.

The advocacy began with two mothers with a common goal, to give and provide quality education to their children Ivan and Thomas and the children in the community.  Jacinto is the mom of a five-year-old boy Thomas, who was diagnosed with Hyperactivity Disorder at the age of three. Thomas underwent Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Playgroup in an alternative school. The disorder was detected when Thomas was enrolled at St. Theresa Preschool, where the teacher told Jacinto that Thomas needed to be assessed by a Developmental Pediatrician. "This started my struggle to be a mom a full time mom to my one and only son," says Jacinto. Now at five, he has graduated from the St. George Academic and Tutorial School kinder level. "This school accepted my son as a normal kid But still the community cannot accept why Thomas loves to play around in a bigger and crowded place…like the graduation. I heard from different people 'not so good words,'" says Jacinto.

Founder and Directress Grace Barroga is a single mom of Ivan George, who was diagnosed with above average I.Q. Ivan is a gifted child. At the age of one, he could already read phrases, play tunes on the piano just by hearing it from the radio or cellphone tone without proper piano lessons, and make a simple cartoon. This coming school year he will be in his sophomore year of high school at Sta. Catalina College, as Barroga wants Ivan to finish his studies and enjoy his childhood in a normal school and not a school for Gifted Children. "We at St. George Academic and Tutorial School invite all the people in our community to be our partners in making our advocacy possible," says Jacinto.

On June 13, three children with special needs namely 2-year-old Gelo, and 3-year-olds Nicole and Elijah will enroll in the SPED Class for free. They will be assessed by Developmental Pediatrician Stella Manalo of UP PGH. After the assessment, they will go through behavioral modification "These kids need your support," says Jacinto.

On June 30, they will also have a Medical and Dental Mission with the cooperation of doctors and dentists from Care Channels, Inc. Philippines. The mission will be held at 9 am at 1805 Oroquieta St, cor. Malabon St. near Tayuman Sta. Cruz, Manila on school premises.
