Testament to its leadership in sustainability and environment-friendly business operations, the
ASEAN conglomerate, Siam Cement Group (SCG), has received a gold rating in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Building: Operations & Maintenance for its corporate headquarters. Moreover, highlighting its continued commitment to forwarding green operations in
the Philippines with its subsidiary, Mariwasa Siam Ceramics (MSC), the Conglomerate has increased its stake in MSC from 46% to 83%.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is a certification issued by the US Green
Building Council (USGBC), the foremost rating system for sustainable building and construction. The conglomerate’s headquarters was recently renovated to be more energy-efficient and environment friendly.
For their efforts, SCG won the Thai Energy Award in the retrofitted building category, and was also the first runner-up in the same category at the Asean Best Practice for Energy Efficient Building Awards in 2011.
In the Philippines, MSC is the first ceramic tile manufacturer to earn an eco-label seal of approval for employing an integrated ecology process in its operation to reduce carbon dioxide emission.
With SCG’s increased investment, the conglomerate’s total assets in the country have increased 35%, bringing it to $228 Million.
Aside from expanding their assets in the Philippines, SCG predicts expansion growth for its ASEAN businesses, as 10,000 of its employees are now estimated to be working outside of Thailand, representing 26% of the company’s total workforce. Clearly positioned for sustained growth, for the first quarter of 2012, SCG has reported a 2% growth year on year, with revenue at $ 29 Million (889 MB) for the first quarter of 2012.
The conglomerate is aiming to achieve the platinum rating for LEED, and plans to enact a holistic program which would involve designing office areas ergonomically, managing temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels, installing solar tiles to generate electricity and increasing office green space by 25%, encouraging the use of public transport, and installing ceramic tiles and paving blocks that absorb less heat.
