Former Agriculture chief Sebastian, 69, passes away

Former Agriculture Secretary Roberto S. Sebastian died on Monday, the Department of Agriculture said in a statement Wednesday.

Sebastian, a staunch figure in the Philippine banana industry before he served in government, was 69.

Surviving him are wife Melba Erum Regis, children Rommel Patton R. Sebastian, June Genevieve R. Sebastian and Robert Charles R. Sebastian.

The Department of Agriculture family headed by Secretary Proceso J. Alcala expresses its deepest sympathy to the Sebastian family, according to the statement

“The Department is saddened for his loss and we wish that his family, relatives, and friends will find solace and strength in his memories. We do share their grief, and our thoughts and prayers continue to be with them as they gradually overcome this moment of grief,” said Alcala.

The former secretary introduced the Key Production Approach or KPA that became the basis in the formulation of the Medium-Term Agricultural Development Plan. It eventually allowed the agriculture sector to have a fighting chance in meeting the challenges of competing globally, the department said.

He was appointed DA chief in 1992 by former President Fidel V. Ramos.

Sebastian also served as the country’s Special Envoy for Agriculture to the World Trade Organization.

Before his stint in the DA, Sebastian was a prominent figure in various private corporations.

His remains lie in state at the Heritage Park in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City until Wednesday, July 25, and will be flown to Davao City on Thursday. — PDC/VS, GMA News
