Employees volunteer for environmental projects during FedEx Cares Week


FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYS: FDX) and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, kicked off its fifth annual FedEx Cares Week in Asia Pacific.  From September 8-16, FedEx volunteers in 12 Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, donated their time to community groups and programs. This is part of a global FedEx initiative involving more than 4,000 employees around the world.
 
Across the region, FedEx Cares Week activities had a strong sustainability focus.  Around 1,000 FedEx volunteers in Asia-Pacific were expected to support local organizations in 31 community activities, including tree planting, establishing organic vegetable gardens in schools, and environmental protection education sessions for children. Other projects being supported include coastal cleanups, improving drinking water systems in schools, and helping rebuild a remote fishing village affected by the Tsunami. 
 
In the Philippines, FedEx volunteers facilitated environmental education sessions to secondary school students of Makati Science High School as part of the FedEx/Haribon Eco Leaders for Sustainable Communities Program. More than 160 students have become more environmentally aware and empowered to lead conservation efforts in their communities. The students will be part of a continuing program where they will undergo series of learning sessions to become young Eco Leaders. 
 
FedEx Philippines employees dedicated a day educating secondary school students of Makati Science High School on environmental sustainability as part of the FedEx/Haribon Eco Leaders for Sustainable Communities Program.

Sustainability is a common social concern across Asia.  We are continuing to build environmental responsibility into our daily business practices and our employee volunteers are actively engaged in instilling environmental awareness at the grass roots level in their local communities to help improve quality of life,” said David L. Cunningham Jr., president, FedEx Express Asia Pacific.
 
FedEx is committed to environmental sustainability and community programs in Asia Pacific.  In March 2012, FedEx launched Eco-drive in 10 Asia-Pacific markets, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.  The aim of the Eco-drive campaign is to improve fuel efficiency by changing the daily driving habits of hundreds of FedEx drivers.  Along with the Eco-drive program, the FedEx commitment to environmental sustainability includes shifting to more efficient vehicles and aircraft through increased investment in all-electric and alternative drive train vehicles and adding 777F aircraft to its fleet.
 
More than 160 students have become more environmentally aware and empowered to lead conservation efforts in their communities by engaging them in interactive lectures and group activities. With the guidance of FedEx volunteers, the students came up with brilliant recommendations on how to make their environment sustainable and creatively presented their ideas through skits, song, dance, and slogans.
Since FedEx Cares Week first launched in the U.S. in 2005, it has expanded to more than 40 countries and territories around the globe.  Together, FedEx volunteers around the world will donate thousands of hours of their time to serving local organizations.
