Celebrating art at the Maningning Miclat Awards

Twenty-eight paintings with the theme “Ang Pangarap Kong Bayan/The Nation in My Mind” were short-listed among the entries in the 2012 Maningning Miclat Art Competition. The paintings are by the students and/or graduates of Angeles City National Trade School, Ateneo de Manila University, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science & Technology, FEATI, Negros Oriental State University, Philippine Women's University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of the East, University of the Philippines in Baguio, Diliman and Los Banos, University of Santo Tomas and Tarlac State University.   The paintings are mostly done in oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media by artists below 28 years old. They will be exhibited during the Maningning Art Awards night to be held at Sining Kamalig, Ali Mall, Cubao, Quezon City on September 27 at 6:00 p.m.

Top 3 entries will be awarded cash prizes, a Julie Lluch sculpture trophy for the 1st Prize and Certificates of Merit to the 2nd and 3rd Prize, special hard-bound edition of award-winning books by the Miclat family and tuition-free training on Chinese painting by the eminent artist Arsenia Tsai Shui-yuin.   National Artists F. Sionil Jose, Bienvenido Lumbera and Virgilio S. Almario, and world-famous sculptor Ramon Orlina together with the Maningning Foundation trustees will award the winners during the program which will also  feature poetry reading by previous judges and winners of the Maningning Trilingual Poetry Competition. They  include the poets Gemino H. Abad, Rogelio Mangahas, Marne Kilates, Vim Nadera, Michael Coroza, Benilda Santos, Shirley Lua, Mikael de Lara Co and Mesandel Arguelles. Songs on the theme of the art competition will be performed by ROCKBATO, an independent pop/rock/alternative band  which began in 1997 and headlined by artist, composer and singer Aba Lluch Dalena. Banaue Miclat Janssen will emcee the program which will spotlight a talk about the process of judging in this year's art competition by the judges Imelda Cajipe Endaya, Alfredo Liongoren and Pablo Baens Santos.   The Maningning Miclat Art Award which is held during even-numbered years alternating with the Poetry Awards held during odd-numbered years will honor the late Chinese poet, James Na, a.k.a. Na Teng Choon and internationally as Yun He. Na who passed away recently was a founding member of the Maningning Foundation Board of Trustees and in charge of the Chinese Poetry division of the Maningning Poetry Competition. As the literary editor of the local Chinese newspaper, World News, he published 15-year old Maningning's first book of poetry, Wo De Shi (My Poems) in 1987, a year after the Miclat family's return from China where they stayed for 15 years.   This year's event by the Maningning Miclat Art Foundation is co-sponsored by the Liongoren Gallery and Sining Kamalig.   For particulars, email maningningfoundation@gmail.com or acmiclat2008@yahoo.com.
