Kanto Artist Run Space turns one with First Orbit

 

A STREET CORNER   à   street art—and street artists—and trash, and trash-talkin’—and films, and shorts, and docus—and artists’ talks—and curators’ talks—and sketching sessions—and jam sessions—and potluck parties—and David Foster Wallace—and how to make a book in five days (without using your computer?)—and t-shirt printing, and guerrillas—gorillas?—mukhang gorilla?—teka, upo muna. Dito, sa sahig—sa karton—pwedeng pwede. Tambay lang muna. Inuman—yosi—chismisan—may bookstore!—may library. May zines—may negotiation tactics—the subconscious—Mebuyan—sneaking off into the backroom—(teka, anong meron sa backroom?)—(secret.)—tangina THIS!—jamming ulit—movie night—kwentuhan—workshop—and worship—and live art—tagay!—

 

—and all this, and then some, in year one. And now, orbit: one complete revolution. Revolution: a sudden, momentous change in situation, discipline, or way of thinking. An upheaval. Expect this of one small room. Intimate and cozy and all at once prism of many disciplines. See this one, varied constellation: because the small and marginal can exact change—

 

—and now, orbit: a range of activity, experience, or knowledge. From painting, to sculpting, to videos, to performances, to plagiarism (read: re-appropriation, don’t sue!), to book-making, to the act of opening boxes from halfway across the globe. Modus operandi: include and cross-pollinate. Diversify. With beer in hand, guitar in the other. Or book, or zine—

 

—and now, orbit: sphere of influence.  Geared to foster a growing community. Poised to participate, co-create, co-curate, as this is how you cultivate: emerge from towers, caves, condos and bungalow homes. —T.C.M. Kanto Artist Run Space celebrates the past year made up of interesting exhibits and ever mindful of experimental, explorative and novel approaches. Through this show, the space also renews its commitment in fostering artistic and cultural work and support to new upcoming artists and their projects.
