In commemoration of Bonifacio Day this Nov. 30, the Ateneo Art Gallery and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business present “Beyond Protest : Philippine Social Realism” from the Ateneo Art Gallery Collection.

"Bunong-Balikat" by Al Manrique
The exhibition celebrates the revolutionary spirit of Andres Bonifacio that lives on in the activists of this generation and continue to call attention to the plight of the masses and push for government reforms and accountability. It features paintings, sculpture and posters from the 1970s and 1980s of some of the most renowned Social Realist artists Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Al Manrique, Neil Doloricon, Ana Fer, Pablo Baen Santos along with video pieces by Kiri Dalena, Manny Montelibano, and Yason Banal. The latter three use methods that speak to today’s plugged-in generation, referencing images from news features and movies, reconfiguring them to convey despair or disgust, forcing the viewer to question the current state of affairs. It is art that engages, that plants a seed of discontent and alters perspectives.

The exhibit runs until November 28 at the Atrium of the Ateneo Campus in Rockwell.  It is presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business. For more information call the Ateneo Art Gallery at 4266488. Press release and photo from Ateneo De Manila University
