TLC's Sand Masters takes sand castle building to a whole new level, literally

These are not your typical sand castles! Across the United States and around the world, the unconventional artists of SAND MASTERS – Rusty, Kirk, Andy, Matt, Morgan and Sue – create unimaginable masterpieces on a massive scale that will defy expectations and often defy gravity. 

 

Throughout this 16-part series, this group of incredibly talented and commited artists builds colossal works of art from sand while battling seemingly insurmountable challenges like unpredictable weather, wildly ambitious designs, demanding clients, and a ticking clock.

Award-winning sand sculptor Rusty Croft has not only turned his love for playing in the sand into an art, but into a career. Rusty, along with his longtime friend-turned-business partner, Kirk Rademaker, and their SAND MASTERS team, travel the world creating unthinkable yet functional works of art so magnicently real. Each week, Rusty and his team push the limits of sand while going head to head with erratic Mother Nature and each others’ creative differences. Their quirky passion takes them across the country, circling the globe and immersing themselves in local cultures before digging in the sand to build oversize yet delicate works that combine the careful craft of sculpting, over-the-top imagination and creative mechanical works. 

 

From building sand sculptures for a circus-themed birthday party in Miami, Florida to creating an actual working champagne tower made entirely of sand in Napa Valley, the SAND MASTERS  find inspiration for their extreme art in the most astounding of situations. 

 

Whether it’s pulling off a 60-ton (54,431kg) castle of sand, crafting three-dimensional, lightsaber-weilding characters from Star Wars, trekking through the jungles of Costa Rica or capturing the sacredness of Thailand’s nation-wide Water Festival, the sculptors are constantly challenged by demanding, eccentric clients and sometimes even unusable sand.
