Nationalist sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, who is known for his monumental sculptures, actually began his artistic career as a young jewelry designer for La Estrella del Norte in 1964.
His first art jewelry collection was launched in 1972 and was exhibited in Manila, Milan, Rome and Palm Beach.
Castrillo’s art jewelry has been collected by the who’s who of Philippine society including international personalities like Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; Sophia Loren; Cristina Onassis, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kissinger; and former American President Gerald and Betty Ford.
Body sculptures, as the artist calls his art jewelry works that he personally handcrafts, showcase his playful side, highlighting the small scale of his asymmetric and angular monuments. It reveals a side to the artist, with the unique capacity to feel at home in opposites—in sculpturing both large scaled monuments with sublime themes and creating small intricate art for the human body.
Castrillo’s jewelry line, as well as his sculptures, are currently on view at the ArtWearAble exhibit until September 7 at Yuchengco Museum. The show also features the works of National Artist Arturo Luz, Hans Brumann, Leeroy New, Ramon Orlina, Ann Pamintuan, Impy Pilapil, and Michelline Syjuco.
