Celebrating Joey Samson’s 10th Anniversary in the fashion industry

Throughout his illustrious career, Joey Samson has been called many things: the structuralist, the non-conformist, the menswear maker, Philippine fashion’s master of androgyny. 

 

Now, the man who once aspired to become a doctor but suddenly found himself pursuing his love for clothing and beautiful things is marking his milestone 10th year in the industry, with the many friends, muses, and collaborators he has found along the way.

 

Joey Samson X is an audio-visual exhibit and design event that celebrates the fashion designer’s work through a series of interactive pieces created by friends in the industry, paying tribute to the man and his most iconic masterpieces. 

 

The JSX video + art installations will feature works by JSX Artistes, namely Jo Ann Bitagcol + Melvin Mojica, Mark Nicdao, Sara Black, Everywhere We Shoot, HF Yambao + Nasser Lubay, Gino M. Santos, Jake Verzosa, Niccolo Cosme, Noel Manapat + Jay Yao, and Ronnie Salvacion + Paulo Vinluan. 

 

Each of the JSX Artistes will be mounting creations in homage to the beautiful, most unforgettable works that Samson himself has contributed to the annals of Philippine fashion design history. 

 

Among these are his Cage Dress, Ribbed/Corded Dress, Transitions Skirt, Ladies’ Origami Dress + Men’s Jacket, Mitate Ladies’ Tuxedo, Deconstructed Jacket and Skirt, Man on The Moon, and more. 

 

In line with these, the exhibit will feature a variety of art that celebrates fashion in many forms, including short films, videos, paintings, digital art, and performance art. 

 

Upon entering, guests will be given a map leading to the different pieces, allowing them to explore the space and get a new experience with each station they visit. The event will culminate in an interactive fashion show featuring models wearing pieces from Samson’s Capsule Collection, acting as living tableaus to showcase his latest works.

 

Also, in the light of the recent calamity that strike the country, a portion of the total pop up boutique sales will be donated to the victims of Typhoon Maring.

 

Nothing could be more fitting for the man who has strived to remain low-key and let his work speak for himself, yet who manages to make fashion-watchers sit up and take notice with each new move and innovation. “I do not take interest in the surface,” says Samson, describing his approach to fashion design. 

 

“It’s the perspective I’m after. It’s what I always try to understand—the process behind a creation.” Indeed, with this unique event, the likes of which has never before been mounted in the local fashion scene, guests will get a chance to take a peek at the inner workings behind Samson’s design process, as well as that of the people who have been inspired by his creativity.
