Commuters can now Scan to Pay via QR for rides at EDSA Busway

DOTr, GCash make EDSA Busway rides more convenient with Scan to Pay via QRPH

Metro Manila commuters can now use GCash, the country's leading finance super app, to pay for their rides at the EDSA Busway, making their trips more convenient with the cashless payment system.

In a launch event at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITx), the Department of Transportation (DOTr), GCash, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Metro Mega Manila Consortium Transport Corp., and Mega Manila Consortium Corp. officially introduced Scan to Pay QRPH payments for commuters traversing Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare.

GCash is making everyday commutes more convenient by allowing passengers to pay fares quickly and securely, providing passengers a payment option other than cash. It promotes a hassle-free experience, especially during peak hours.

“Malinaw po ang utos sa atin ng Pangulo: gawing moderno at mas convenient ang travel experience ng ating mga pasahero. Sa pamamagitan po nitong cashless payment natin sa EDSA Busway, magiging mas madali na ang pagbabayad ng pamasahe ng mga commuter,” DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez said.

(Our President has a clear directive: make the travel experience of every Filipino modern and more convenient. With the cashless payment system at EDSA Busway, the commuters will find it easier to pay for their fares.)

“This proves the President’s commitment to the people to make the daily commute experience of our kababayans easier, faster, and more inclusive. We will work hard to make this new system as seamless as possible,” he added.

GCash Scan to Pay via QR is already available in 226 buses, with more operators expected to roll out the Scan to Pay option in the following months. To pay, commuters will just need to scan the QR code on the SoundPay device, enter the amount, and confirm payment. An audio notification will be heard once the payment is settled.

The Scan to Pay option is expected to benefit millions of commuters. According to the DOTr, over 63 million passengers traveled along the EDSA Busway last year.

"Public transportation plays a vital role in that future. It connects millions of people daily, which makes it a powerful platform for driving digital adoption. Through our initiatives, we support national goals of building a cash-lite, digitally empowered society—one where innovation enhances mobility, efficiency, and quality of life," GCash for Business Head Jong Layug said.

The latest launch aligns with the overall strategy of GCash to modernize the country’s public transportation system.

Earlier this year, GCash also launched the cashless payment schemes at the Metro Transit Line 3 (MRT-3). This positioned the Philippines in the same category as its Southeast Asian neighbors, such as Singapore, which have implemented open-loop ticketing systems in their public transportation networks. It reduces friction for commuters, allowing them to use mobile wallets and cards to pay for their rides.

“Building on our leadership in transforming MRT-3 fare payments, GCash continues to expand cashless solutions across Metro Manila, now including the EDSA Busway. Our goal is to create a seamless, convenient commuting experience where riders can pay quickly, safely, and reliably using their GCash app,” Layug concluded.
