How would viral Pinoy videos on YouTube like that of "Ate Vangie," the fictional Philippine counterpart of Apple's Siri, fare against similar videos from other countries?

YouTube users may soon find out with the new "YouTube Slam," a video discovery experiment where users vote for their favorite videos.

"Each week a new crop of videos battles head-to-head in Comedy, Cute, Music, Bizarre and Dance Slams, where your votes determine who wins the Slam and gets featured on the leaderboard," software engineer Tomas Izo said in a blog post.

Izo said users can earn points for predicting the crowd favorites, and see how they stack up against other players at the end of each week.

They can also subscribe to the Slam channels to see each week’s video leaderboards: Comedy, Cute, Music, Bizarre or Dance.

"Get your daily dose of the most talented, hilarious, adorable or weird videos on YouTube, and you could help uncover the next big thing," Izo said.

A separate article on tech site The Next Web said "Slam" has similarities to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's original project "FaceMash," which in turn was reminiscent of "HotOrNot."

"On both of those sites, you’d vote for the person you felt was more attractive. This time around, you’re voting for YouTube videos. It’s a smart way to drive community engagement and video views," The Next Web said.

"While it doesn’t appear that there any prizes for winning, this is definitely a boredom buster," it added. — ELR, GMA News
