'Gangnam Style' overtakes 'Call Me Maybe' as most-watched YouTube video

Remember "Call Me Maybe," the music video that went viral on YouTube since March? No? Well, that may be because you're too busy watching PSY's "Gangnam Style."

As of Tuesday afternoon (Manila time), the Korean pop juggernaut has overtaken Carly Rae Jepsen's hit by about two million votes.

"Gangnam Style," posted July 15, had already garnered 271,017,575 views, including 2,703,049 likes and 118,611 dislikes as of 4:15 p.m.

In contrast, "Call Me Maybe," posted last March 1, had 269,437,642 views, including 1,088,389 likes and 77,399 dislikes also as of 4:15 p.m.

Tech site Mashable noted "Gangnam Style" hit 100 million views at the start of September, and is now almost thrice that number.

"Both 'Gangnam Style' and 'Call Me Maybe' have spawned a number of viral parodies, further extending their respective webs of social sharing and irresistible Internet appeal," it noted.

Among the more notable “Call Me Maybe” covers include Harvard’s baseball team, Abercrombie and Fitch models, Sesame Street‘s Cookie Monster and digital versions of presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.

For “Gangnam Style,” covers include a dancing duck, fresh-faced Navy cadets and even Adolf Hitler, Mashable said. — TJD, GMA News
