Rodin was born on Nov. 12, 1840, and earned the distinction of being the progenitor of modern sculpture.

While he wanted to study arts at what many consider to be the best school of arts in Paris, he was supposedly never allowed to study there.

Yet, he became one of the most famous sculptors in France and was renowned worldwide for his work.

He is also credited for having the unique ability to model a complex surface in clay, though many of his sculptures clashed with figure sculpture tradition.

"The Thinker," a bronze-and-marble sculpture, is one of his most famous works.
