New iPad Mini scam circulating on Facebook

Facebook users wanting to get their hands on the newly-released iPad mini tablet may want to steer clear of this new scam targeting them.

The scam spreads via a rogue application for the popular social network, according to a blog post by security vendor Sophos.

"The result is all too predictable - the rogue app instantly posts a message to your Facebook wall, in your name, encouraging your friends to also click for a chance to win an iPad Mini," it said.

"Rogue applications (like the one in this scam) can be used to scoop up your personal information, or spread spam and scams rapidly across the social network," it added.

Sophos said the message claims to be part of a "Free iPad mini offer" and urges the recipient to click on a link to "get Free iPad mini."

Clicking on the link takes the recipient to the rogue Facebook application, that asks for various permissions and privileges, including the right to post on the victim's wall.

Because of this, it said Facebook users should also be wary of getting messages from Facebook friends "about how you can receive an iPad Mini for free."

Sophos said those behind the scam would ask for control of what gets posted to the victim's Facebook account - and details of the victim's personal information.

It advised victims to remove the messages from their timeline, revoke the app's publishing rights and report the app as spam to Facebook.

"(A)nd ensure that you have revoked its access to your account," it added. — TJD, GMA News
